From an Old Kitchen Window

I'm not sure if you've ever felt caught in between worlds, but I do. I've been in the States since September, but my heart still walks on water back to our apartment in Portugal. (The photo above was taken from our old kitchen window, in between the yellow curtains.) Rachel was one of my roommates in that old apartment, and she has been feeling the same. She's just written a lovely poem about the strange haunting of being kept up at night by good memories. Take a trip over to her Nashville blog. Rachel's words work faster than an Air Portugal flight in taking me back to Lisbon.

Yes! I'm amused that the Socialist Party sign with the fist-in-air only appears as a beam of light in this photo.

I feel stuck between two worlds all the time. Sometimes the memories are so powerful I forget where I am. I have a great memory from your kitchen by the way. You were gone somewhere - I don't remember where - and I had come back in the afternoon from being down at the beach all morning. The apartment was quiet and still. The windows were open and Gus was snoozing. After a long shower and a short nap, I woke up to the sun streaming in through all the windows and the wind blowing the curtains. I turned on OTR's "Ohio" and went into the kitchen. I stood there for a long time just looking out of that same window enjoying the beauty and peace that seemed to flow in with the moving curtains. This moment is forever etched into my memory. Then I made some coffee, and ironed my pants in the kitchen while singing along to the song "Fool" at the top of my lungs. :) I miss you nelly...

Mel,
Thanks so much for sharing that memory. It is so very close to many of my own memories of that kitchen, those curtains, Over the Rhine, and the most beautiful cat in Portugal.
Miss you, too, Mel.
